Lubicon Lake Indian Nation Little Buffalo Lake, AB 403-629-3945 FAX: 403-629-3939 Mailing address: 3536 - 106 Street Edmonton, AB T6J 1A4 403-436-5652 FAX: 403-437-0719 January 9, 1992 Enclosed for your information is a copy of a letter to Daishowa Vice President Tom Hamaoka on the Lubicon situation. The author of the letter advises Mr. Hamaoka that she will refuse Daishowa bags when she makes purchases and will encourage others to do the same. Simply refusing Daishowa bags or boxes when making purchases is a good way for individuals to support the boycott of Daishowa paper products, especially in areas where there's no organized boycott effort. Daishowa paper products are easily recognized by the Daishowa name and logo on the bottom of the bag or box. * * * * * December 30, 1991, letter from Ontario resident M.J. McIntyre to Tom Hamaoka Dear Mr. Hamaoka: I have been following the plight of the Lubicon Lake Indian Nation in the Peace River District of Alberta for many years. These people have suffered and paid dearly for their lands. First, in early contact with the Department of Indian Affairs, they failed countless times to be recognized as a band. In recent years, the oil companies have come into their area wreaking havoc on their lands and their livelihood. Now Daishowa is setting up a pulp and paper industry in the Peace River District. This treatment of the Lubicon people cannot continue. You will be responsible if these people are beaten down again by your environmentally unsound practices. I strongly urge you to stop further development in the area of the Lubicon Lake Nation land claim until a fair settlement has been reached with the federal government. They deserve a settlement that recognizes and compensates the members for many years of persecution. The paper bas provided by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario are made by Daishowa. I shall refuse your bags when making any purchases and encourage others to do the same. Sincerely, M.J. McIntyre
